Things to do this weekend

Tryon Riding and Hunt Club 1-day Schooling Horse Trial (Tryon, NC): Entries are already closed on this, but I think we're going to have a good Knoxville contigent. There's Alex, Debbie, Tally, Amelia, me, Kathryn and Callon from Penrose, and Maggie's new owner Laura is going to tag along to possibly compete or cross-country school, as her truck is broken down and she is stranded in Tennessee for the weekend. I see they've put Esprit and I in the BNR division, but I want to publicly assure everybody I'm competing against (Debbie, Kathryn, Tally) that they have NOTHING to worry about. Our goal for the weekend is to get around without humiliating ourselves, so no threat there. Most importantly, I foresee a Friday night dinner at Sidestreet Pizza if anyone wants to meet up. They have the best cheesey garlic knots in the world so if nothing else, I expect to come home 5 pounds heavier. Ride times posted online at http://www.trhcevents.org/.
CDCTS-sponsored Cindy Sydnor clinic at Penrose Farm (Knoxville): I don't know much about Cindy except for little things she's written for Dressage Today (the article she wrote about "buying the best horse you can afford," in which she justified selling your car or taking out a second mortgage to buy your dream horse, kind of sold me on her). Also, my friend Lisa was a working student for her a long time ago and, while this doesn't say much, she's a much better dressage rider than I am. Tough but good, I believe, is her reputation. Anyway, you can't ride with her--sounds like the clinic is full--but you can go audit for free, and it's always more fun to watch someone else get yelled at than to get yelled at yourself. Contact Susan Price at sprice5105@aol.com or on FaceBook (you are FaceBook friends with Susan Price, aren't you?) for more info.

Cross-country schooling at Percy Warner Park (Nashville, TN): The Park is open every Saturday in August from 8 a.m. to noon, so this is your last chance if you want to get a school in before the event in October. Long drive but it's a good deal: $20/horse. Info at http://www.mtn-ponyclub.org/.

Tennessee Valley Hunt Foxhunting Clinic (TVH Kennels): This clinic was a big success last year, and it's a good way to introduce your young foxhunter or event horse to jumping in the great wide open. They cancelled the live hunt on Sunday but are giving participants a guest voucher to use later in the season (the cap fee is $100 now--can you believe that?). Since the clinic itself is only $45 and it includes lunch, that makes it a really good deal. The clinician is Rosemarie Merle-Smith, MFH, who has trained multiple riders through the preliminary level. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Contacts: Rosemarie Merle-Smith, MFH, groro@aol.com, 434-294-0310 or Carla Hawkinson, MFH, 865-385-7240

ETHJA-sanctioned show and HHTN "Trail Challenge" at Stone Gate Farm (Knoxville): Contact Becky Teague at 691-6919. The Trail Challenge is a benefit for Horse Haven of Tennessee.

Full Gallop H.T. (Aiken, SC) and Richland Park (Michigan): USEA-sactioned horse trials. Kaitlyn Jansen's going to Full Gallop! Good luck Kaitlyn!!! Mary Hollis is at Richland Park! Good luck Mary Hollis!!!
